The 2022 Ontario general election was held on June 2, 2022 to elect the 124 members of the 43rd Parliament of Ontario. The Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario, led by Doug Ford, won a majority government with 83 of the 124 seats in the legislature. The incumbent party, they increased their seat share from 76 in the 2018 election. They campaigned on a slogan to “get it done,” pledging to build highways and transit infrastructure and open up the “Ring of Fire,” a mineral-rich area in northern Ontario. Instead of an election platform, the Ontario PC Party presented its promises on its website in the form of press releases throughout the campaign.

Justification

The Ontario government launched a court challenge against the federal carbon levy. After losing in the Ontario Court of Appeal, the province filed an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. The case was heard in September 2020. This promise is therefore kept.

“The Supreme Court of Canada is set to hear appeals in three separate cases to determine if the federal carbon tax legislation is constitutional or if it encroaches unacceptably on areas of provincial jurisdiction.”

Justification

“In June, we were disappointed to learn that in a split decision, the Ontario Court of Appeal did not accept our position that the federal carbon tax is unconstitutional. Despite this decision, we remain committed to using every tool at our disposal to fight against the job-killing carbon tax, which is making life more expensive for Ontario’s hardworking individuals, families and businesses. That is why we filed our appeal of the decision on the carbon tax to the Supreme Court of Canada today.”
