Promise History
2.03.01 - “Doug Ford and the Ontario PCs will […] keep costs down by lowering the gas tax by 5.7 cents per litre”
31-Oct-2023
During their previous term, the Ford government introduced legislation to reduce tax rates on gasoline and fuel by 5.7 cents between 1 July 2022 and 31 December 2022. They have since extended this tax rate reduction twice: once in November 2022, and again in October 2023. This extends the tax rate reduction through to 30 June 2024. This promise is considered kept unless the government fails to maintain the tax rate reduction.
“Since July 1, 2022, Ontario has lowered the gasoline tax by 5.7 cents per litre and the fuel tax by 5.3 cents per litre. The government is proposing to extend the rate cuts so the tax rate on gasoline and fuel (diesel) would continue to remain at 9 cents per litre until June 30, 2024.”
Ontario Extending Gas and Fuel Tax Cuts to June 30, 2024
13-Nov-2022
During their previous term, the Ford government introduced legislation to reduce tax rates on gasoline and fuel by 5.7 cents between 1 July 2022 and 31 December 2022. In November 2022, the government then extended it through to 2023. Although the government did keep their promise to reduce gas tax by 5.7 cents, to date there is no indication that the Ford government intends to extend the tax relief on a permanent basis. As a result, this promise is considered partially kept.
“Doug Ford said his government intends to table legislation that would leave the tax break that cut gas prices by 5.7 cents a litre in place until the end of 2023. The cut first went into effect on July 1 and was originally due to expire on Dec. 31.”
