In addition to the funding to fight child exploitation, the Ontario government established the Office of Illicit Drug Intelligence, which seeks to disrupt the drug supply chain coming into Ontario and provide additional support for tracking illict drugs and human trafficking. Therefore this promise is considered kept.
“The Ontario government is investing $75.1 million to reinforce the fight against gun and gang violence in communities across the province. The funding will support initiatives that will dismantle criminal activity, enhance investigative supports, increase collaboration throughout the justice sector and stop the flow of illegal guns across the border. […] Building on Ontario’s Guns, Gangs and Violence Reduction Strategy, this three-year investment will include: Establishing the Office of Illicit Drug Intelligence to disrupt the drug supply chain coming into Ontario and provide enhanced investigative support to identify and prevent cross-border drugs, guns, and human trafficking.”

The Ontario government has invested resources to fight child exploitation and human trafficking but has not made similar investments in combatting the production and smuggling of contraband goods, apart from illegal tobacco. The promise therefore remains in progress.
“We are investing an additional $18.2 million over three years to protect and support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis woman and girls who can face higher rates of violence than others. And $18.5 million to support victims of domestic violence and human trafficking survivors find and maintain safe housing. We remain committed to supporting victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and other violent crimes.”

“Yesterday, the Ontario Minister of Finance Victor Fedeli, released the Fall Economic Statement, which highlighted the government’s plan to address the province’s illegal tobacco problem. […]. Additionally, the ministry will also launch a tobacco enforcement grants program to incentivize regional police to pursue investigations into illegal tobacco. A similar program was initiated in Quebec several years ago that has proven to be effective. For every one dollar spent in Quebec, they make back 14 dollars in provincial excise tax revenue. These are results that will make a difference in Ontario.”
