The 2022 Ontario general election was held on June 2, 2022 to elect the 124 members of the 43rd Parliament of Ontario. The Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario, led by Doug Ford, won a majority government with 83 of the 124 seats in the legislature. The incumbent party, they increased their seat share from 76 in the 2018 election. They campaigned on a slogan to “get it done,” pledging to build highways and transit infrastructure and open up the “Ring of Fire,” a mineral-rich area in northern Ontario. Instead of an election platform, the Ontario PC Party presented its promises on its website in the form of press releases throughout the campaign.

“Since its launch in 2021, Ontario’s SDF has aimed to help train almost 600,000 workers in in-demand sectors, including over 66,000 construction workers, over 92,000 manufacturing workers and over 36,000 personal support workers (PSWs) / health care workers. Over 420,000 of these participants are expected to be from underrepresented groups such as women, youth, persons with disabilities and Indigenous peoples. Justification

The Ford government has made a number of steps towards the Skills Development Fund, including investment in both training and capital streams. Furthermore, the government launched Skills Trade Ontario in January 2022, to improve training. This promise remains in progress as more investments are made towards the promised $1bn to get people into jobs in the skilled trades.

“To help address challenges to hiring, training and retaining workers, including apprentices, and to drive Ontario’s economic growth, Ontario has invested over $860 million in the Skills Development Fund Training Stream since its launch in 2021. Through its first three funding rounds, the Skills Development Fund Training Stream has supported close to 600 projects, helping over half a million people advance their careers and earn bigger paycheques.”

“The Ontario government is working for workers by investing $5 million to provide free training to 500 people from underrepresented groups to prepare them for well-paying jobs in the province’s thriving automotive manufacturing sector. The project will provide participants with the necessary skills for rewarding careers in machine operation, assembly, quality control, and logistics. The program will also help address a critical shortage of workers in a vital industry as Ontario positions itself as a North American leader in auto manufacturing.[…] This project is funded by Ontario’s Skills Development Fund, a more than $200 million initiative that supports innovative programs that connect job seekers with the skills and training they need to find well-paying careers close to home.”

“Skilled trades workers are vital to Ontario’s future growth and prosperity, so it is more important than ever to break the stigma associated with these jobs, simplify the system and encourage employer participation. It is also important to identify and remove barriers for those who do not often consider the trades, such as women and Indigenous peoples, to encourage their participation in apprenticeship training. This is why the government is investing an additional $114.4 million over three years in its Skilled Trades Strategy.”

“The Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 is enacted. The Act sets out provisions regarding the practice of trades in Ontario and apprenticeship training and certification, and provides for the continuation of the Ontario College of Trades under the name Skilled Trades Ontario (“the Corporation”).”
