Promise History
1.02.001 - Support the transition committee’s work on the Status of the Artist
06-Jun-2025
We believe this promise has been fulfilled, as the Status of the Artist Act received Royal Assent on June 6, 2025.
“Status of the Artist Act

Status of the Artist Act

We note that the Status of the Artist Act falls in line with the transition committee’s recommendations, and thus consider that this promise is on its way to being fulfilled. We will consider this promise fully kept when the bill receives Royal Assent and becomes law.
“New Brunswickers celebrate their culture, but artists haven’t always been paid in a way that reflects that pride. The provincial government introduced legislation Friday that’s meant to address that problem. If passed, the Status of the Artist Act would recognize the arts as a profession. In practical terms, this would mean a requirement for written contracts and the payment of industry-standard fees by arts organizations, events and festivals the province funds. It would also lead to accreditation of artists organizations and festivals funded by the province and the development of regulations. (…) Legislation like this was a recommendation of the Premier’s Task Force on the Status of the Artist, which was established in 2014. Led by experts in the field, the task force was asked to recommend measures to improve the socioeconomic status of professional artists.”
New legislation would boost pay for New Brunswick artists

We consider this promise to be pending. However, we note that there are planned discussions between the provincial government and organizations such as the AAAPNB (Acadian Association of Professional Artists of New Brunswick) on the status of the artist in the times to come. Thus, we will revise our judgment at that time.

Traces of this promise can be found in the mandate letter addressed to the Minister of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Isabelle Thériault. Mandate letters define ministerial objectives. Therefore, this promise remains an ongoing priority, and we will monitor its implementation.
