New Brunswick property tax overhaul

We consider this promise to be in progress. The government has started public consultations for the property tax overhaul and seeks to complete it for the 2027 tax year.
The New Brunswick government is seeking public feedback as it works to overhaul the property tax system, which was one of the Liberal’s campaign promises during the 2024 provincial election.
“New Brunswickers want and deserve a property tax system that is transparent and provides fairness and stability moving forward,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy in a news release. “This overhaul is intended to support a long-term transformation that is sorely needed.”

This communication from Minister Aaron Kennedy (Local Governance and Service NB) highlights that the promise is still pending, and his government is still reflecting on the matter.
“Last year, during New Brunswick’s election campaign, Susan Holt promised an overhaul of New Brunswick’s entire property assessment and tax system by 2026, to make it more “affordable, fair, competitive and transparent where everyone is paying their fair share.” That review is underway and is being conducted by Service New Brunswick and Local Government Minister Aaron Kennedy.”

Traces of this promise can be found in the mandate letter addressed to the Minister of Finance, René Legacy. Mandate letters define ministerial objectives. Therefore, this promise remains an ongoing priority, and we will monitor its implementation.
