Promise History
1.01.023 - “We will prioritize assistance for civilian police training operations, particularly Francophone officers, who are in great demand in French-speaking countries with peace operations.”
11-Sep-2019
The available data from the RCMP, Global Affairs Canada and Public Security show that Canada has some current missions where the French language is the main language of engagement. The only new police-training mission is in Mali, with 5 officers deployed. Given the general promise in the 2015 election of bringing Canada back onto the international scene in peacekeeping missions, this level of engagement falls short of expectations created by the discourses surrounding the new direction in foreign policy pledged by the Liberals. Currently, there are 14 UN peace operations including Haiti, Lebanon, Mali, the Central African Republic and the Western Sahara. Canada is only involved in Mali and does not figure among the top 10 contributors. Therefore, we consider this promise as broken.
