The plan has been developed, but there has been no collaboration with British Columbia. There has even been confrontation. Moreover, the 2025 target is still far away.
“Ironically every group mentioned by Beech in his comment have criticized the sudden and unexpected pre-Christmas decision to phase out 19 salmon farms off Discovery Islands in BC, which is expected to impact 1,500 jobs on Vancouver Island’s coastal communities . BC Premier John Horgan has chastised it. First Nation leaders call it a hollow decision forced upon them.”

“Budget 2021 proposes to provide $647.1 million over five years, starting in 2021-22, with $98.9 million in remaining amortization to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to: Stabilize and conserve wild Pacific salmon populations, including through investment in research, new hatchery facilities, and habitat restoration. Create a Pacific Salmon Secretariat and Restoration Centre of Expertise. § Improve management of commercial and recreational fisheries. Double the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund with an additional $100 million. Further engage with First Nations and fish harvesters.”

“Budget 2021 proposes to provide $20 million over two years to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to expand engagement with the Province of British Columbia, Indigenous communities, industry, scientists, and other stakeholders. This consultation would inform the development of a responsible plan to transition from open net-pen salmon farming in coastal British Columbia waters by 2025.”
