Promise History
3.06.008 - “A re-elected Liberal government will [m]ake sure the oil and gas sector reduces emissions at a pace and scale needed to achieve net-zero by 2050, with 5-year targets to stay on track to achieving this shared goal.”

The adding of the goals for 2030 and 2035 completes the promise.
“As part of this effort, Canada has established its 2035 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 45–50% below 2005 levels. This milestone reinforces Canada’s commitment to tackling the global climate crisis and will shape our next decade of climate action, aligning environmental progress with economic growth.”

Although the reduction will help reduce pollution from the oil industry, the concrete plan has yet to be unveiled.
“Today, the Government of Canada introduced draft regulations to put a clear limit on greenhouse gas pollution from oil and gas production. The proposed regulations work by setting a cap on greenhouse gas pollution within the sector, equivalent to 35 percent below 2019 levels. They would create a cap-and-trade system designed to recognize better-performing companies and incentivize those that are higher polluting to invest in making their production processes cleaner.”

“See Figure 1.”The Government plans to implement a national emissions cap-and-trade system through regulations to be made under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA). This will establish a technology-neutral marketbased instrument that supports cost efficient emissions reductions, while ensuring that the GHG emissions from the sector do not go above a set level and decline over time.”

“Budget 2023 proposes to expand eligibility for the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit to include geothermal energy systems that are eligible for capital cost allowance Classes 43.1 and 43.2. […] Projects that will co-produce oil, gas, or other fossil fuels would not be eligible for the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit.”
